HE’S one of the masterminds behind the “Hello, and Welcome to the Gold Coast” video campaign which welcomes athletes in their native tongue.

And Declan Roe is just getting warmed up.

The Bond University student has spent much of his young life inspiring others, with the notion of giving back.

“In the most normal way, it’s a really good way to give back to the community,” Declan said.

“I consider myself an empathetic person, and have done a lot of volunteering through the PCYC ... anything where I can give back to the community I’m interested in.”

Sharing stories with others was his inspiration to be a Games volunteer.

WHY GOLD COAST COMMONWEALTH GAMES VOLUNTEERS ARE INDISPENSABLE TO ITS SUCCESS

“I listened to the stories of people talking about their experiences volunteering in Glasgow and at the Sydney Olympics, and I thought I want to have that experience,” he said.

“I’ve grown up here, it’s my city, and I’m really proud to have such a cool thing happening.”

And of course, the moment he’s most looking forward to?

“I’ll be at the medal ceremonies at Carrara. So I’ll get to see the athletes and be there at their final moment,” he said.

“ ... when they’re at the podium, and their training has finally paid off. It’ll be exciting to be there for the happiest moment of their life.”
