FOR some, the process of checking in, ushering and guiding spectators around venues might seem tedious but for Donelle Coulter, she couldn’t be more excited.

WHY GAMES VOLUNTEERS ARE INDISPENSABLE

The 58-year-old retiree is one of 15,000 volunteers who is working with the Commonwealth Games and she loves it, saying it’s in her blood.

Growing up, she watched both of her parents volunteer through the local Lions club, a tradition they continued for 50 years.

“Life was always volunteering. They always thought it was the right thing to do,” Ms Coulter said.

“I went to see the (Brisbane) Games in 1982 and I remember seeing the volunteers and thinking, ‘one day I’d love to do that’.”

After retiring from 25 years of teaching at Mudgeeraba State School, she decided it was time to move on from the classroom and follow the dream.

Starting out interviewing and training volunteers in preparation for the Opening Ceremony was a far cry from her time as a sports coach.

Now Ms Coulter is a team leader at Carrara Stadium, responsible for more than a dozen people and loving it.

But she said her children weren’t quite following in the family tradition.

“I’d love to say they volunteer, but no — though, they do things like the walk for leukaemia, a few things, so I suppose that counts.”

Share your most memorable moment from your volunteering experience of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games for your chance to be featured in the Gold Coast Bulletin’s Thank You to the Volunteers of the Commonwealth Games magazine and to go in the draw to win one of 25 two-night stays at Sea World Resort.
