Pitch Perfect star Ester Dean talks cast group chat, including Rebel Wilson’s loved up texts

One of the stars of Pitch Perfect has revealed the cast group chat is still firing, and it’s all about Rebel Wilson’s new found flame.

Rebel Wilson goes public with millionaire boyfriend Jacob Busch

The Barden Bellas are still as close as ever, despite their last Pitch Perfect movie wrapping more than three years ago.

Pitch Perfect first premiered in 2012 and the stars all became instant gal pals in real life, going on to film two hugely profitable sequels.

Ester Dean, who plays Cynthia Rose in the films, told news.com.au the first friend she made on set was none other than Australian actress Rebel Wilson, who plays Fat Amy. (Though the possibility of reprising that role may be tough considering her incredible 20kg weight loss.)

Dean, who is a judge on the series Songland which is currently airing on Foxtel channel E!, said the Bellas’ group chat was lighting up of late over Wilson’s romance with her new beau, millionaire Jacob Busch.

“Rebel was my first friend in the movie, we called ourselves salt and pepper,” she laughed. “We still talk, that’s real, we still on that group chat. Rebel’s in love right now and we’re all obsessing over her boyfriend. Brittany (Snow) just got married.

“After all these years we’re just as close. The Bellas are living life right now.”

Though she said she wasn’t aware of a Pitch Perfect 4 in the works, Dean did say, “it’s a beautiful thing to know that we have a possibility”.

While Dean, 34, is no doubt best known for starring in the hit musical movies, she is also one of the music industry’s top songwriters and is known as ‘The Song Machine’.

Some of her most notable hits include Rihanna’s tracks Rude Boy, What’s My Name, Where Have You Been and Katy Perry’s smash Firework, as well as Nicki Minaj’s Super Bass.

She’s also penned songs for Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Drake, Selena Gomez, Usher and Britney Spears.

As for what her most memorable artist experience was, Dean put Rihanna at the top of the list.

“I don’t have a favourite but Rihanna took me along with her to Barbados and I got to go on the tour bus,” Dean said.

“I’ve always been ‘team Rihanna’. I got to go into her world and have this massive experience, and it allowed me to write and observe on her behalf.”

Dean currently stars on Songland, a US songwriting competition which sets out to give undiscovered songwriters an opportunity to write a hit.

“What makes a catchy song is a catchy hook and a catchy beat,” Dean said. “A good catchphrase, a good statement and a call to action.”

Songland airs Wednesdays on E! at 8.30pm
