Meet Australia’s top TikTok stars.

These young Aussies have been nominated as 2024 TikTok content creators of the year and they are tackling misconceptions of what it means to be an influencer.

Following in the footsteps of last year’s winner Indy Clinton, the nominees include Bridey Drake (3.2 million followers), Maddy Mcrae (1.8 million), Jojo ASMR (4.2 million), Elle Ray (642.1K), Josh and Matt Design (3.3 million).

“A pretty common misconception is that it’s a really easy job, and that we just get up and film a cute video and that’s it,” Maddy McRae told Confidential.

“We work really hard on creating really engaging content, high quality content, staying up to date with trends, making sure that we’re posting consistently, staying engaged with our communities, and replying to our followers.”

Journalism student Elle Ray, 21, gained attention for her red carpet interviews with Margot Robbie and at the Brownlow Medal Awards.

“My favourite word to describe my job is that it’s different. I think with a job like this, you’re on 24/7 and that’s like one of the difficulties that I kind of face. You can’t kind of switch off when you’re on your phone, I find myself trying to relax on Tiktok as I’m scrolling, and I’m like, wait, this could be good for work.”

Melbourne couple Josh Jessup and Matt Moss started on the platform to promote their candle business yet were recognised for their unique house decor.

“There’s a huge misconception that you can’t pivot, or there’s a formula to content creating, or you have to be a certain kind of person,” they said.

“There’s room for everybody and everything and our story kind of shows that with starting as a small business selling candles to decorating our crazy house in the middle of nowhere in our country bumpkin area.”

With the TikTok Creator Fund not an option in Australia, meaning creators cannot profit from their videos based on views and likes, all the nominated creators said they earn money through brand deals.

The TikTok awards is returning to the Hordern Pavilion on 27 November with Robert Irwin taking centre stage as the host and American singer and dancer JoJo Siwa to perform.
