A GIANT AFL-themed childcare centre is planned for a site next to Carrara’s Metricon Stadium.
The Gold Coast Suns has submitted a development application for the centre, which will include a 13.5m tall Aussie rules “ball’’.

Council documents show the centre, first revealed last year by the Gold Coast Bulletin, would sit on 14,000 sqm of land at the southeastern side of the Carrara sports precinct
According to the plans before council, it would have places for 203 children, including 40 with special needs.

There would also be a childcare teacher training college and administrative office as part of the campus, with a maximum of 50 students and 15 staff.
Operator Kool Kids wants the centre to be open from 6.30am to 6.30pm daily while the teachers college would be run from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

The crèche would be operated on Gold Coast Suns games days in additional to regular services.
A food and drink kiosk and a shop selling Suns merchandise would also be included in the project.

“The built form has been themed in AFL, and more particularly Gold Coast Suns colours and branding, and incorporates an extensive range of outdoor recreation and play areas including a mini sports/AFL field, mini tennis courts and a range of playground area, equipment and facilities,” a planning report submitted to council says.
“Reinforcing the synergy of the use in a design sense with the Gold Coast Suns and a key feature of the development is the 13.6m high AFL football which forms the entry statement for the development and is flanked by AFL goalposts.”
It will go before councillors for approval later this year.
