Miller, 49, was sentenced to more than five years jail for playing a “central role” in a drug trafficking plot to supply methamphetamines and heroin and associating with an organised criminal gang.

The Manly-born former butterfly swimming champion who competed in the 1996 Olympics winning a silver and bronze medal cited his sporting prowess for his own drug abuse and mental health challenges that led to his criminality.

He also won two gold medals at the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

The NSW Parole Board on Friday ordered he be released sometime this month, no later than June 21.

The former media darling remains behind bars in the Hunter region until his release arrangements can be made.

Miller, a cocaine user, was first arrested in 2008 over an ecstasy supply ring and sentenced to community service. He was arrested again in 2013 on more serious charges and criminality.

In 2021 the District Court heard he had a secret compartment in his Toyota Camry to transport the meth, melted into wax candles.

A police hidden camera tracked the former athlete as he moved the drugs from Sydney to regional NSW including Yass. A later raid on his inner west Sydney home found a commercial quantity of heroin and cash in a hidden locked safe.

He was eligible for parole since February but only granted today as other outstanding charges had to be heard.

NSW Community Corrections advised the NSW State Parole Authority that Miller has been assessed at a low-medium risk of reoffending and recommended his release to supervised parole.

“Mr Miller has a long history of substance abuse and appears to display some insight

into this problematic behaviour,” Community Corrections reported.

rendered him ineligible for programs in custody, but “it has formed a comprehensive plan

to address his criminogenic factors and assist his reintegration in the community”.

Miller cited the suicide of his ex-wife TV personality Chalotte Dawson as having put a mental strain on him as he blamed himself for her death.

The court had also heard he had made “a number of bad business decisions” that took a turn for the worse when Covid shut down his trucking business.

Miller, who was attacked in prison while he was asleep, was sentenced to five years and six months in jail for supplying heroin and ice in commercial quantities.
