The death of a young woman who was savagely beaten in a Sydney apartment before her boyfriend attempted suicide has plunged her family into an “abyss of sorrow”.

Detectives are looking into whether Chinese student Liqun Pan, 19, was possibly killed in a horrific murder-suicide gone wrong in the Wolli Creek unit in June.

Her boyfriend, a 20-year-old also from China on a student visa, was found with head injuries on a footpath near the apartment by police before they later found Ms Pan’s body.

It is believed he fell four floors from the unit block but survived before being placed into an induced coma.

Friends gathered at Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park in Matraville on Tuesday to say goodbye to Ms Pan but her family in China was tragically not able to attend the funeral due to coronavirus border closures.

Jenny Xu, the family’s lawyer, read out a message on behalf of her shattered parents who were unable to travel for the service.

“The sudden passing of our beloved Liqun has plunged our family and friends into an abyss of sorrow,” her parents said.

“We can never forget that grim day, when the news of our daughter’s misfortune from Australia arrived.”

Ms Xu, who works at Longton Legal, said Ms Pan’s parents had spoken to her on social media app WeChat only two days before the incident in the lead up to her birthday.

“Liqun’s upcoming 20th birthday will not be seen by her or her loved ones,” Mr Xu said.

“She has drifted alone in Australia and has now drifted to a place of no return.

“We believe that justice may not be swift, but it will never be absent, although this case is still under investigation, surely the day of revelation will come.”

It’s believed a weapon was used and Ms Pan had serious injuries to her upper body.

St George Police Detective Chief Inspector Robert Allison had previously said Ms Pan had been in Sydney for only a few years to study at an English language college in the CBD.

She had been seeing her boyfriend for more than two years, but police wanted to speak to her friends to get more information on the state of their relationship in recent months.

Ms Xu said Ms Pan’s parents wanted to thank two police officers for their help during the investigation.

“Here, on behalf of Liqun‘s family, I would like to thank Senior Constable Kearms and Detective Constable Huang for all their efforts in investigating the death of their most beloved daughter,” she said.

“Thank you for your dedication and integrity, it has brought comfort to the family during their darkest moments.”
