A former junior rugby league coach from Sydney’s inner west has admitted to sending indecent material to a teen.

Daniel Perestrelo was mentioned in Downing Centre District Court on Monday after pleading guilty to using a carriage service to send indecent material to a person under 16.

The 25-year-old was a volunteer junior rugby league coach when he was arrested over allegations he engaged in sexually explicit conversations and sent sexually explicit images to teens online last year.

Joshua Perestrelo allegedly sent a 13-year-old boy explicit images on social media and has been granted conditional bail.

Court records show he was also charged with other offences including using a carriage service to solicit child pornography. However, no plea has been recorded for that charge.

Lawyers for Perestrelo told the court they needed more time to obtain a psychiatric report on their client before he was sentenced.

The court was told the report would look into Perestrelo’s remorse, the likelihood of him re-offending and the motivation behind his alleged offending.

Prosecutors did not object to the delay.

Judge Chris O’Brien agreed to adjourn the case and said he would sentence Perestrelo in November.

Following his arrest, Perestrelo had been living with his parents in Canterbury.

Outside court, a neighbour of Perestrelo’s family had previously told The Daily Telegraph he had been surprised at the charges.

“There’s two parents, three kids. I’ve lived here for about seven or eight years, they moved in a year after us. No complaints,” he said.

“I’m very surprised (about the charges), I’d never expect that.

“There are lots of young kids living on the street. I’ve got a little sister who’s 14 and a family down the road has about six kids.”

Perestrelo had worked as a volunteer referee for a number of years in the St George and south Sydney rugby league competitions.
