ICAC announces further investigation of Berejiklian’s ex, Daryl Maguire

The findings from the ICAC’s probe of Gladys Berejiklian’s former secret partner, Daryl Maguire, have been put on hold while “further investigative steps” are taken.

The corruption watchdog is undertaking “further investigative steps” in its probe of former MP Daryl Maguire after it was sensationally revealed he had a secret affair with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian while making potentially dodgy deals.

The Independent Commission Against Corruption, earlier this month, announced Counsel Assisting the Commission Scott Robertson would not reveal his preliminary findings in Operation Keppel as expected on December 7.

Counsel Assisting‘s “submissions” would have been given to parties involved in the investigation a chance to read and respond before the ICAC hands down a final report.

No reason was given for the delay but, on Friday, Operation Keppel announced the submissions were indefinitely delayed because they were still investigating.

“The Commission has decided to place the current submission process on hold pending the completion of some further investigative steps,” a spokeswoman said in a statement.

The probe into Maguire had heard weeks of testimony about cash for visas scams and developer connections that cast a shadow over the former Liberal MP‘s time in NSW Parliament.

But Operation Keppel exploded onto the national stage when the former Member for Wagga Wagga took to the stand and revealed he had been in a relationship with Ms Berejiklian for years.

Ms Berejiklian confirmed that in her own evidence and tapped phone calls heard Maguire talking about parts of questionable deals with his secret partner - the NSW Premier.

“I don‘t need to know about that bit,” she told Maguire in a call where he mentioned a debt-wiping deal that ended up falling through.

Ms Berejiklian is not the subject of the ICAC probe.

The Premier managed to survive the intense political fallout that followed insisting she had made bad choices in her personal life but did not have a specific knowledge of Maguire‘s dealings.

It‘s now unclear when the submissions from Counsel Assisting will be revealed - and what impact it will have on Ms Berejiklian’s political future and that of Maguire.

The ICAC, on Friday, said a new timetable for the submissions will be outlined in the new year.
