Exclusive CCTV shows final moments before Amar Kettule was shot dead

CCTV footage has revealed the final fatal moments before underworld figure Amar Kettule was gunned down in a hail of bullets early on Sunday morning in what is believed to be a targeted hit.

The known standover man was ambushed in Downey Lane, Fairfield, as he and his girlfriend drove their heavily-tinted black Toyota Prado into their Fairfield Towers apartment complex at 2.40am on Sunday.

CCTV obtained exclusively by The Daily Telegraph shows that just hours beforehand, at 7.30pm, Kettule, 34, arrived home dressed in a white Adidas shirt and gold spade card chains with his girlfriend.

He then changed into a black shirt before making the fatal decision to leave the complex at 8.40pm.

It was hours later, as he returned to the complex, that he was shot in front of his girlfriend, just 30 metres from DK Shawarma & Burgers eatery, which is owned by his brother, Feras.

On Monday, silent family and friends crowded around a makeshift candlelight vigil in the alley where he was killed, mourning the loss of a man they knew as a “kind person.”

A local business owner who works in the complex where Kettule lived said he was a friendly person that would frequently wave at locals and once brought cookies to share with the women at nearby businesses.

But behind the scenes, he was a major player in the criminal underworld, operating as a standover man who extorted money and was a senior member of the True Kings street gang.

Yesterday, police were investigating whether the feud between the True Kings and DLASTHR may have been a motive for the killing, but did say it was too early to know for certain as the investigation continues.

An underworld source told The Daily Telegraph Kettule was a high-level drug associate and may have been killed as part of a drug-related turf war.

A former girlfriend said he would frequently carry thousands of dollars in cash and had a couple of mobile phones - raising her suspicions that he was involved in underworld activity.

His brother Dyllan, died in eerily similar circumstances in 2014, when he was shot and killed as he sat with his girlfriend outside a block of Canley Vale units at 2.45am on Sunday.

Born in Iraq in December 1986, Amar was brought to New Zealand at age eight as the Kettules went in search of a better life.

In 2001, the family migrated to Sydney, setting down roots in the south western suburbs when Amar was 14.

The Assyrian underworld seduced Amar who police believe was a senior member of the True Kings gang.

Based largely in Fairfield as an offshoot of the Assyrian Kings, which rose through the 1990s, the True Kings are sworn enemies of another group known as DLASTHR (The Last hour).

Samer Marcus, a senior member of DLASTHR, survived an attempt on his life two months ago when he was shot six times in the chest, jaw and back while standing in the driveway of his Denham Court home.

NSW Police have set up Strike Force Fitzhill – comprising of Fairfield detectives and the Homicide Squad – to investigate Amar’s early morning execution. There is no suggestion Mr Marcus had any involvement in Amar’s death.

Even by the time Dyllan was shot dead in 2014, Amar had amassed his own body of criminal work.

There had been two stints in prison, including for commercial drug supply, by May 2015 when he was sentenced for a break and enter which he pulled with three other men.

A security guard noticed a chain had been cut and a car had pulled into a commercial premises late one Sunday night, so he pulled his car in to inspect.

“Reverse the car or I will f***ing kill ya” a man said to the security guard, who obliged.

The sentencing judge Richard Cogswell could not conclude whether the words came from Amar but convicted him for his role in the break in and during sentencing he noted Amar suffered “survivor guilt” over the death of his younger brother.

“A forensic psychologist … diagnosed Mr Kettule with a number of conditions, including a persistent complex bereavement disorder and post traumatic stress disorder. He had what the psychologist described as ‘survivor guilt’,” the judge said.

The court heard Kettule was in remission from both drug and alcohol addiction in 2015 and had pulled himself together, opening his own car mechanic shop while working weekends in a family hospitality business.

This Friday, however, on January 15, Kettule had a matter listed in Fairfield Local Court – police had taken out an Apprehended Violence Order against him to protect another man.
