Man shot in head in suspected gangland shooting in Campsie

A manhunt is under way after a 27-year-old was shot in the head and chest in Sydney’s southwest overnight.

Campsie Shooting

A man is fighting for life after being shot in the head and chest overnight in a suspected gangland attack in Sydney’s southwest.

Police were called to Canterbury Rd, Campsie about 9.20pm after receiving a number of calls reporting the shooting, which occured in an underground carpark at the complex.

Paramedics treated a 27-year-old man for injuries to his chest and head before he was taken to St George Hospital with a police escort, where he remains in a critical condition.

It’s believed two people were shot at during the incident.

A resident of the apartment complex said he was watching a movie with his partner when he heard a loud bang from the underground car park.

“I heard a bang but my missus said she heard three,” he said.

“It was a different sound, a basement noise. I didn’t think it would be a shooting.

“I saw fire crews and just thought it was a little fire.”

The man said police were blocking entrances to the B2 and B1 underground car parks where blood was scattered.

“I think it happened on B1. There was blood there last night.

“It’s normal these days (shootings) but I didn’t think it would happen there, it’s weird.”

Fire and rescue crews responding to a car crash were first on the scene, and rendered first aid to the gunshot victim until paramedics arrived.

Residents surrounding the Canterbury Road apartment complex said they didn’t hear any shots fired, but were alerted to the shooting by over 10 emergency service vehicles.

Mother Rashmi Khardka said she was concerned for the safety of her daughter living in the suburb after she found out about the incident.

“This area needs a lot more surveillance,” Ms Khardka said.

“It’s definitely very scary. It gets very dark at night.”

Another neighbour said he had returned home from work to find police cars parked outside his driveway.

Police remained at the Canterbury Road crime scene on Wednesday morning.

A number of underworld sources said they believed the incident was connected to recent shootings.

It comes as police probe whether three car fires in Berala, Birrong and Kingsgrove have any links to the incident.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews extinguished a Mercedes sedan which caught alight in Kingsgrove, and the two other vehicles which were destroyed by fire on Tuesday night.

Police were seen inspecting the vehicles closely and speaking to local residents.

Strike Force Faux was established to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.

Police fear this shooting is the latest in a gang war fuelled by drugs and a fight over drug territory.

Sydney’s streets have been bathed in blood, with a number of separate shooting incidents in recent months terrorising residents.

A gunman opened fire on Khoder Hamdan while he was sitting in his parked car at Wetherill Park last month.

He was treated for non-life threatening injuries in what was the second attempt on his life in three months.

On July 27, Ferenc Stemler was met with a hail of bullets outside his Canterbury home. He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

Days earlier, Ahmad Al-Azzam was shot in the same suburb – dying on Thursday from his wounds – in an attack that also injured Kaashif Richards and Achiraya Jantharat.

Earlier in July, a balaclava-clad gunman busted into Adel’s Salon on busy Marrickville Rd. Brothers William and Eric Siale were both shot but survived.

And, gangland Mr Big Alen Moradian nicknamed the ‘Tony Soprano’ of Australia’s cocaine scene, was shot multiple times in the head as he sat in his car in an underground car park at Bondi Junction in June.

The use of burnt-out getaway cars have been a common theme in all of the 23 underworld-linked murders to have occurred on Sydney’s streets since late 2020.

More to come.
