A man who was shot in the head while sitting in his car at Greenacre on Sunday has died in hospital, tragically becoming the second person to lose their life this week on Sydney’s out-of-control streets.

Ahmad Al-Azzam’s relatives announced his death on social media on Thursday morning, just minutes after NSW Police launched a strike force to look at five shootings in as many days.

“It’s with great sadness we announce my brother Ahmad Al-Azzam, 25, returned to his Lord this morning,” a post read.

Mr Al-Azzam, 25, was sitting in his Toyota in Mayvic St, about 2.15am, when an unknown gunman fired multiple shots at him.

Police said one bullet went through his head.

Kaashif Richards, 22, and Achiraya Jantharat, 19, were parked 50m down the road when the barrage of shots rang out.

One of the gunman’s shots pierced their car, hitting the innocent Mr Richards in his neck and Ms Jantharat in her back.

They remain in hospital with serious injuries.

Police sources said while Mr Richards and Ms Jantharat were together, they did not know Al-Azzam.

About five minutes after Mr Al-Azzam, Mr Richards and Ms Jantharat were shot, a BMW station wagon stolen from a home in the city’s eastern suburbs earlier this year, was found on fire near Amy St in nearby Regents Park.

CCTV showed the BMW speeding away from the scene before it was burnt out.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of either the Greenacre or Regents Park scenes between 2am and 2.30am Sunday, and has information or dashcam vision relevant to the investigation, to contact Auburn Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Mr Al-Azzam is the second person to die from five shootings this week, after a man was shot dead in Canterbury on Thursday morning.
