A stolen BMW has been captured on CCTV speeding away from the scene of a triple-shooting at Greenacre.
The footage shows the vehicle, believed to have been stolen from the city’s eastern suburbs earlier this year, moving at speed down Mayvick St, in an industrial part of Sydney’s western suburbs, at 2.15am on Sunday.
The vehicle was next seen ablaze on Amy St in the neighbouring suburb of Regents Park.
Just minutes earlier police believe a gunman had opened fire on two cars, one containing Ahmad Al Azzam, 25, and then another in which Kaashif Richards, 22, and Achiraya Jantharat, 19, were sitting together.
Al Azzam was shot multiple times, including in the head, and has been on life support in Liverpool Hospital with grave fears he ultimately may not survive.
Police sources said the volume of bullets shot into Al Azzam’s car would suggest it was a “targeted” attack.
It remains unclear though if it is in any way linked to Sydney’s ongoing underworld war, with Al Azzam not known to have any links to organised crime.
Richards and Jantharat are also considered by police to be completely innocent victims of the attack.
Richards is understood to have suffered damage to one of his vertebrae when he was shot in the neck, while Jantharat is in a stable condition after being treated for a bullet wound to the back.
Homicide Squad Commander Danny Doherty described the shooting as “tragic”.
“It is a brazen, tragic shooting of three people. (The) motives are still unknown,” Det Supt Doherty said.
“It’s already been confirmed that we can’t find at this stage any links to organised crime.”
Detectives are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of either the Greenacre or Regents Park scenes between 2am and 2.30am, and has information or dashcam vision relevant to the investigation, to contact Auburn Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
