Two children were among seven people seriously injured when a P-plater allegedly lost control during a late night street race in the NSW Hunter Valley.

A Subaru sedan slammed into two parked cars and a group of people who had gathered at a notorious ‘hooning’ hot spot at Abermain just before midnight on Saturday.

Two girls, aged eight and 10, suffered internal and facial injuries when the out-of-control car struck them.

Five adults, including the 18-year-old male driver, were also taken to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle for treatment.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner David Waddell said part of the investigation will look at why the two kids were there.

“It is very, very concerning that we’ve got eight and 10-year-olds out at a street racing event at that time of night,” he said. Witnesses said the car was being driven at speeds of up to 100km/h.

There were initial reports the driver was performing a burnout, but police said they will allege he was street racing at the time.

After slamming into a parked car and 4WD, witnesses turned on the driver and allegedly bashed him. He was taken by helicopter to hospital in a serious condition, where he remained on Sunday under police guard.

Locals said the area is notorious for street racing and crowds of up to 100 gather on some Friday and Saturday nights.
