A 53-year-old northern Sydney woman has been released on bail after allegedly vandalising bathrooms in CommBank Stadium and a local shopping centre with Islamophobic, anti-Arab slurs nine times over a period of seven months.
Police attending Parramatta’s CommBank Stadium during the NRL All Stars event on Saturday night were alerted to offensive graffiti found inside toilets at the venue around 7pm, where they allegedly found the phrases “The Mob have spoken Arabs are all terrorists & need to f**k off to Palestine” and “Arabs & Muslims f**k off to Palestine you pack of terrorist dogs. Scarf = ugly sluts. Islam = terrorist cult,” written in black texta.
Following their initial inquiries, officers located and arrested 53-year-old Bronwyn Nowicki inside the stadium at 7:40pm, who was taken to Parramatta Police Station and charged.
Nowicki’s alleged act of vandalism on Saturday was only the most recent in a string of incidents, police will alleged, having charged Nowicki with nine counts of destruction or damage of property in total.
Two charges relate to the graffiti at CommBank Stadium, while the other seven relate to similar hateful scrawlings on toilet doors at the Westfield Hornsby shopping centre dating back to July 2024.
“Islam is not a religion, it is a satanic cult” and “Go to Palestine if you want to support the dogs there” were among the phrases identified after Ku-ring-gai police launched an investigation into malicious damage inside toilets at Hornsby Westfield on Monday, January 20, as well as comments describing Muslim women as incestuous.
Nowicki appeared before Parramatta Local Court on Sunday afternoon via audiovisual link and was released on conditional bail.
Wearing a pink T-shirt and black glasses on top of her head, the blonde woman sat quietly throughout the proceedings, occasionally fiddling with her handcuffs and interjecting only once to request the magistrate take into account her need to drive her father to medical appointments in determining conditions.
Police prosecutor Sgt Hillery opposed bail, arguing her release was “endangering the safety of the community” given the alleged offences occurred in very public locations and are already “far too prevalent currently in the community”.
Nowicki’s Legal Aid lawyer conceded the “gravity” of the alleged offences was in the “high range”, but urged the magistrate to take into consideration her lack of prior criminal antecedents and “upstanding good character”, as well as myriad mental health concerns.
The court heard Nowicki still “struggles to deal with the grief” of losing her mother in January 2024.
Magistrate Wills imposed a residential condition that Nowicki must stay at a Mount Colah address with her elderly father and siblings, and prohibited Nowicki from entering Westfield Hornsby until her matter has been finalised.
She will next appear on Thursday February 20 at Hornsby Local Court.
