Tributes flow for young policeman Tanzeel Bashir found in Royal National Park

A young NSW Police officer who died in the Royal National Park over the weekend is being remembered as a “loving son, brother, and friend”.

Tanzeel Bashir’s body was discovered in the early hours of Saturday in bushland south of Sydney.

The tragic discovery of the 23-year-old Constable from Bankstown Police Area Command was made by his fellow NSW Police officers, who had been searching for him since concerns for his welfare were first flagged the night before.

Relatives and friends, as well as police colleagues, are set to farewell Const. Bashir at Lakemba Mosque on Tuesday.

In a statement, NSW Police said his death was not being treated as suspicious and a critical incident would be carried out, as is standard procedure following the death of an officer.

“Following inquiries, the officer’s body was located in the Royal National Park about 12.40am on Saturday, September 3,” the statement read.

“There appears to be no suspicious circumstances.

“A critical incident investigation has been launched by detectives from the Homicide Squad, who will prepare a report for the Coroner.

“The investigation will also be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and independently oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).”

Mr Bashir’s death comes just weeks after that of much respected Homicide Squad Detective Adam Child.
