The War Episode 3: Blood and vengeance

The woman who was with slain gangster Bilal Hamze when he was shot dead left Sydney straight after his execution and hasn’t returned, the Telegraph can reveal.

Described as a Kim Kardashian lookalike the brunette, aged in her 20s, was with Hamze in an up-market Sydney restaurant when he was gunned down on the footpath in June last year.

The 34-year-old senior member of the notorious crime family began moving addresses after his cousin Mejid Hamzy was killed six months earlier and the war between his family and the Alameddines spiralled out of control.

Dressed in tight black pants and a black jacket she is seen on CCTV footage to hug Hamze as they walk down an alley towards the Kid Kyoto restaurant on Bridge Street, where they spend the next two hours.

After paying the bill of more than $200 the pair leave the restaurant when Bilal is shot as he walks a metre or two in front of his female companion.

“Straight after his (Bilal’s) shooting all eyes were on the woman, but it has died down now and no one really believes she was in the set-up,” a source told The Daily Telegraph.

“But how the shooters knew he was there is still a big question. The Alameddines were looking for him big time and he knew it, but he was still going out and he could have been seen and then watched,’’ the source said.

Police do not believe the mystery woman had anything to do with Bilal’s death beyond being his unfortunate dinner partner at the time.

Bilal’s death features in episode three of The Daily Telegraph groundbreaking video series The War, which is out today. The episode covers the escalating conflict between the Hamzy family and their rivals the Alameddines. Watchthe new episode in the video player above.

One senior officer said they had information that the woman with Hamze on the night of his death is now living interstate. They did confirm she was questioned but would not comment further as the investigation is ongoing.

Hamze, who liked the good life, had relocated to a flash city apartment as the war between the two clans escalated.

He was also involved in an attempted peace deal in the lead up to the shooting but had walked away from it. In the weeks before his murder Hamze was also suspected of shooting an Alameddine relative in the neck as he was sitting in a car at Guildford. The victim survived, which only escalated the conflict and made him a marked man.

Police had warned Hamze repeatedly that he was a target and it was common knowledge there was a contract on his head. It is well known by both the underworld and law enforcement that some criminal groups such as the Alameddines use trackers on vehicles of people they are surveilling.

“They have eyes everywhere and he kept going out to fancy places in the city … That’s not keeping your head down,” the source said.

On the night of June 16 Hamze and the woman exited the restaurant and were on Bridge Street when a car flashed by, a gunman leaned out of the vehicle and shot a volley of bullets into him. The woman was a few metres behind her dinner date.

As he was lying on the ground the killers made a U-turn and pumped more bullets in him.

The woman could be seen sitting on the ground crying as paramedics worked on Bilal Hamze who was declared dead not long after arriving at a nearby hospital.

It was one of the most brazen public shootings in Sydney’s recent history.

The car then raced across the Sydney Harbour Bridge reaching estimated speeds of up to 200 km/hr and was found burnt out in Northwood.

No one has been charged with his murder.
