The War: NSW Police know who did every Sydney gangland hit

Investigators believe they know who carried out each Sydney gangland hit in the last two years but one thing has prevented more arrests and kept killers on our streets. Read the latest part of our video documentary series The War.

The War episode 1: Streets on Fire

There have been more than a dozen men killed on the streets of Sydney in the past two years and police have suspects for just about every one of them.

But proving a person is guilty to the required level is another story.

“We reckon we know who we’re looking for with just about every single one of them,” one investigator said.

“The thing is we don’t want to have any acquittals. Homicides are often a long process and we don’t want to miss a step, but we are confident we’ll get there.

“We’ve already got some blokes in custody for some of them.”

So far the biggest breakthroughs have come on the investigation into the killing of Mejid Hamzy, which was the first killing of the feud between the Alameddine and Hamzy clans.

Four men have been arrested including two mates charged with Hamzy’s murder, and another two brothers for their alleged involvement in providing and later storing, the getaway cars used.

Mejid Hamzy’s murder sparked the start of a bloody and ongoing feud between his family and the Alameddine clan.

It is not alleged that Ezzeddine Omar pulled the trigger, but instead that he was allegedly involved in the planning and execution of Hamzy’s death.

Omar, 40, was arrested at a Liverpool home last July and sat on the front lawn in his underpants, before he was later charged with offences including murder, knowingly deal with proceeds of crime, recklessly deal with proceeds of crime and knowingly facilitate organised car rebirthing activity.

His brother Mohammed Omar, 45, was also arrested on the same day and charged with drug offences, as well as allegedly concealing a BMW used in the murder.

But the big arrests came in March 2021, when mates Christopher O’Brien and Bryce Williams were picked up by NSW Police Criminal Groups Squad detectives.

Both men were charged with murder, supplying prohibited drugs and participating in a criminal group.

None of the men named is accused of any involvement in any of the other killings.

Police have also charged Joseph Vokai with conspiracy to murder over the failed attempt to kill Ibrahem Hamze at North Sydney last August.

Samuel John Rokomaqisa was last year charged with conspire and agree to murder over the same incident.

Police allege the two masked men were planning to kill Hamze before they were fortunately intercepted by officers who noticed them in a stolen car.

A police pursuit ensued, but was eventually terminated before it is alleged Vokai and Rokomaqisa carjacked an elderly man and sped off in his car.
