A Port Stephens teenager is on life support with horrific burns to his entire body after becoming engulfed by a backyard fire.

Jayden Blackie, 17, suffered the burns in what his family described as a “freak accident”.

“He has become engulfed in flames from a backyard fire,” Jayden’s aunt Jessica Manton wrote on a GoFundMe page for the teen.

“He has suffered terrible burns to a large part of his body.”

Emergency services were called to the Raymond Terrace property about 8pm on Sunday night.

“Local ambulance paramedics and emergency services attended the location and commenced treatment of the teenage that had life treating burns to his entire body,” a Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokesman said in a statement.

“The male was further treated and stabilised by the Helicopter Critical Care Medical Team upon their arrival.

“Due to the serious nature of the burns, the male was place into a induced coma and life support prior to being flown direct to the Royal North shore Hospital Sydney in a critical condition.”

NSW Ambulance Inspector Jason Saper said an accelerant caused the fire to erupt.

“It appears that some kind of accelerant has been thrown into a backyard fire and a young man has suffered serious burns to a large part of his body as a result,” Insp. Saper said.

“Bystanders provided initial first aid to the patient before paramedics and the medical team arrived to continue treatment and he was flown to Sydney.”

“Fire is extremely dangerous and burns have the potential to cause catastrophic injury or death. We urge people to be aware of these dangers and exercise extreme caution around open flames.”

Ms Manton said her nephew would remain in hospital for treatment for at least the next few weeks.

She started an online fundraiser to allow Jayden’s mum to take time off work to be at his bedside.

“She has no car or licence and will be relying on grandparents and family members to get to and from Sydney to be with him and her other two children here in Raymond Terrace,” Ms Manton said.

“On top of this is the cost of fuel, food and accommodation for his mum.

“She will need to take time from work to be with Jayden and support his road to recovery.”

The fundraiser, which has a target of $2000, began receiving donations within minutes of being published.
