Police have released terrifying images of a failed gangland hit outside a Sydney gym with bullets flying into a childcare centre missing children and their carers by just centimetres.

One child bent down to pick up a ball and another was crawling on the ground as the bullets flew over their heads into a wall.

The incident took place on the morning of November 29.

Panic stricken, they cling to the carer who jumps up startled at the realisation they have just been missed by a bullet.

A gunman outside had opened fire on Murat Gulasi, an associate of the Alameddine family and three associates as they walked into a gym for their morning workout.

Bullets are seen to hit the steps leading into the complex and go through the wall into the creche next to World Gym at Prospect at 11.30am on November 29.

CCTV vision captures the moment the carer suddenly realises that they have been shot at.

Gulasi is dragged into the building suffering a gunshot wound to the leg.

“These public place shootings endanger the lives of innocent members of the public, and in this instance, left bullet holes in a children’s play area where young toddlers were being cared for at the time,’’ said criminal groups squad boss Detective Superintendent Grant Taylor.

Soon after the shooting a grey Mazda wagon used in the shooting was found burnt out.
