A man was shot in the leg and another severely beaten in two home invasions in Sydney’s west, which police are now investigating for links to Asian organised crime gangs.
In the first incident at Carnes Hill, a 25-year-old man was shot in the leg when he confronted eight balaclava-clad men, who broke into the home as he, his girlfriend, mother and another female relative were asleep inside, about 12.45am Tuesday.
CCTV shows the eight attackers - who were armed with a machete, pistol and shotgun - arriving in two cars, before bursting into the duplex on Mary Wade Place.
After shooting the man once in the leg in front of his relatives, the attackers then poured petrol throughout the home and on the front door, before fleeing the scene.
Three hours later a separate home invasion in Cabramatta left a 38-year-old man in a critical condition with head injuries.
Police were told the man, his partner and four children were home when three men entered the home and assaulted him, with detectives investigating whether the two incidents are linked - and if they are linked to another attack in Hinchinbrook last week.
“We are looking at whether they are the same gang, but you have eight attackers at one and three at the other - as well as different cars, so it remains unclear,” a source said.
In a final act of warning before leaving the Carnes Hill address, the attackers opened fire with a shotgun on a car parked in the driveway.
Dozens of holes and a large dent caused by the shotgun pellets were left in the driver’s side rear passenger door.
Neighbour and mother-of-three Nicolette Venant said she was woken up around midnight to the sounds of banging and screaming.
Mrs Venant said she saw a small “red” flame burning inside the house after the armed intruders had fled the scene and left the front door open.
Police Superintendent Adam Whyte said the victim was taken to Liverpool Hospital for treatment on his gunshot wound, in a serious but stable condition.
“One of them received a gunshot wound to his right lower leg, but the other persons were involved in scuffles within the home, and we’re working through that as we take statements from those persons,” Supt Whyte said.
“The front door was set alight but it self-extinguished.
“We can say that it is a targeted shooting, not a random shooting ... but we’re working through the details to work out all the parties involved.”
The two incidents come less than a week after a group of nine attackers stormed a home in the neighbouring suburb of Hinchinbrook and held its residents at gunpoint, before demanding cash and then fleeing, with no one injured.
