The mother of a toddler who was threatened with a gun during a violent home invasion has revealed how she tried to talk down the balaclava-clad men as they stormed the home.
Police were called to Hinchinbrook shortly before 10.30pm following reports of an aggravated break and enter.
Officers were told at least nine attackers, including three armed with guns, forced their way into the home and confronted those inside.
The 23-year-old young mum said she and her son were laying in bed when they woke to a loud crash followed by screams.
“I knew something was wrong and when they came into my room I just kept saying please don’t hurt my son,” she said.
One of the young balaclava clad men assured her they wouldn’t harm the baby before another man came in and yelled “where the f--k is the cash?”.
“Most of the house is just kids … I just want these people found, this place just doesn’t feel like our home anymore,” she said.
The grandmother Amy Ellis said her 42-year-old husband Mohammed Derbas and 24-year-old son were attacked during the alleged break-in.
Earlier, Mrs Ellis told media the gunmen pointed a gun to her grandson’s head however later clarified “they held a gun to my husband’s head”.
Ms Ellis and her daughter-in-law confirmed that several men stormed the home after reviewing CCTV footage.
“They came in three cars and parked up … in front of our next door neighbour’s house before running up to the house,” Ms Ellis said.
Ms Ellis said she was in bed when she heard a loud bang like an explosion and came out just as the front door “came flying” off the hinges.
She said the men were disguised in balaclavas as a number of them “bashed” her eldest son and husband, while the others demanded cash and valuables.
The house has been home to her family of eight for eight years and includes four kids, aged between 17 and toddler.
Her husband was asleep on the lounge when the intruders stormed the house, with a number of them allegedly charging at him with guns.
“They had my husband down on the floor after bashing him and had a gun at the back of his head,” she said.
Mr Derbas was hospitalised with a broken shoulder bone and head injuries. The couple’s 24-year-old son was also treated by paramedics for cuts and bruises after the incident.
Ms Ellis said the house feels unsafe and, as long term renters, she’s faced with a difficult living situation with her family.
Seven other occupants inside the home were not injured and police believe no shots were fired at the time of the invasion.
Officers have established a crime scene as investigations continue into whether the invasion was targeted. No one has been arrested or charged over the matter.
