A founding member of controversial drill rap group OneFour will fight allegations he tried to stab a man during a heated confrontation outside a western Sydney home earlier this year.

Dahcell ‘Celly’ Ramos has been behind bars on remand since he was arrested on April 8 – a month after police allege he became involved in a dispute between two groups of people at a house party in Cranebrook, near Penrith.

Police allege video footage taken on the day shows Ramos pulling a large kitchen knife from the waistband of his pants and lunging at one of the men, who narrowly avoided the blade.

He is facing charges of affray, using an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence and wielding a knife in public, to which he is yet to enter pleas.

Ramos previously spent time in jail for a violent hammer attack at a western Sydney hotel in 2018.

The NSW Supreme Court on Wednesday heard Ramos denies he was holding a knife that day, claiming he had been carrying a piece of a Venetian blind in his hand at the time.

The court was told Ramos claims he was not the aggressor and had instead been trying to “defuse” the situation between the rival parties.

“The defence case at trial will be that my client was trying to in effect ‘shoo’ these people away …. and that he had no intent to wound [the victim] in any shape or form,” Ramos’ barrister said.

“My instructions are that there were threats being made on the part of others, not my client, who was …. trying to defuse the situation.”

In an unsuccessful attempt at bail, Ramos’ legal team said the 25-year-old rap artist needed to be at liberty to receive treatment for his addiction to alcohol and would agree to strict conditions on his freedom, including living with his family in Newcastle under home detention.

They said the case against Ramos was not a strong one and suggested the video footage did not show clearly that Ramos was armed with a knife.

“It looks like a knife to me,” Justice Deborah Sweeney said, revealing she’d watched the footage twice in preparation for the bail hearing.

Ramos’ barrister further submitted that if his client was found guilty of the charges, a full-time jail sentence was not a “foregone conclusion”.

Prosecutors opposed Ramos’ release from custody due to the potential risk he posed to public safety.

In court documents prepared by investigating police, officers described OneFour as a “confrontational music group” whose drill rap style of music consisted of “dark and violent references to life on the streets”.

They noted Ramos had been on parole at the time for his involvement in a violent hammer attack at a western Sydney hotel in 2018, for which he served almost six years jail.

“The accused clearly has little to no regard for the safety of other persons, nor the parole conditions imposed upon him,” police said.

In refusing bail, Justice Sweeney noted Dahcell had strong family support but found he had failed to convince the court that his ongoing detention was not justified, given his prior history of violent offending.

The case will return to court in June.
