Amelia Brace, Beau Ryan, Jonathon “JMo” Moran join Keep Them Safe campaign

Some of Australia’s most recognisable faces have joined the Telegraph’s Keep Them Safe campaign which calls on governments to close worrying loopholes in our child protection systems.

Sydney identities have joined the call for governments to close alarming loopholes in Australia’s child safety systems.

The Sunday Telegraph and its sister mastheads launched the Keep Them Safe campaign to call for a national, public register for people with working with children checks, and nationally consistent standards for people working with our kids.

The campaign came in the wake of Victoria Police charging childcare worker Joshua Dale Brown with abusing children in his care, and calls for governments to close loopholes allowing predators to move between jurisdictions undetected.

Former NRL player, The Amazing Race Australia host, and Triple M Sydney breakfast co-host Beau Ryan said he was particularly motivated as a father of two to see the system improved.

“It’s not only sports coaches, but anyone in general working with kids,” Ryan said.

“I’ve got two young kids myself – they’ve both played plenty of different sports and they spend a lot of time training, and playing over the weekends.

“Sometimes my kids are with the coaches as much as they are at home with us, so you want to have coaches and people that spend time with your family to have the same morals and ethics as you do and hold them to the same standards.”

10 News + co-host Amelia Brace said the government needed to act urgently.

“There are so many loopholes at the moment, and so many easy ways for these predators to get near our kids,” Brace said.

“Most of us are working parents, we don’t want to leave our kids with someone else, but we have to, that’s the reality of life today.

“And to not know that you’re leaving them somewhere with people that you can trust is something that is front of mind for every parent in this country at the moment.”

Earlier this month, 10 News + broke a story about an unnamed Sydney childcare worker who has been charged with offences against children and remanded in custody.

“We’ve seen these horrific stories, they are so upsetting, and what those families have been through is something that’s unimaginable,” Brace said.

“If there is anything that can be done to help those families, but particularly those kids, we’ve just got to do it.”

10 News anchor Sandra Sully said it was time to ignore state lines and work together to fix the system.

“Clearly the system is not working given the recent headlines and parents need more certainty,” Sully said.

“The innocent victims through all of this are our kids - and it’s our duty to provide the best protection and safeguards possible.”

The Telegraph’s entertainment editor Jonathon “JMo” Moran recently published his debut book Mental As Anyone, canvassing his journey with mental health, his career in media, and his own experiences as an abuse survivor.

“It just seems nonsensical to me that we don’t have these systems in place already – it’s crazy, it’s absurd,” Moran said.

“Getting a working with children check is just a basic thing – if you want to work with kids, the fact that there’s not a uniform system across the country doesn’t make sense.

“I’ve got one myself for the volunteer work that I do with animal rescue – so why don’t other people have the same things in place?”
