Two seriously injured in Sydney road rage incident

A police officer has been stabbed and a man shot on Sydney’s northern beaches.

Two police officers turned up to a unit block on Warringah Rd at Narraweena just before 5.30pm on Friday.

Assistant Commissioner Leanne McCusker said upon arrival officers found a man, known to police, allegedly armed with a knife and “attempting to gain access to that address”.

It is alleged “a violent confrontation broke out” when police arrived and the man threw a fire extinguisher at one of the officers which hit him in the head.

The officer was also stabbed in the hand during the confrontation.

The second police officer then shot the man in the leg.

“As a result of this one of the police did discharge their firearm,” Ms McCusker said.

“Police were able to gain control of that situation, the man was arrested and police provided first aid to that man.

“The man has now been taken to hospital, is receiving medical treatment and is in a stable condition.”

Both police officers, one aged 21, have been taken to hospital in a stable condition and are receiving medical treatment.

A witness who saw the chaos unfold said he heard yelling and screaming after police entered the unit block.

“Then shots were fired,” he said. “The police officer came out with his head all bandaged. The other man was stretchered out.”

Police do not believe the man lives at the Warringah Rd home.

A critical incident has been declared and an independent team from The Hills Area Command will independently investigate the incident.

Warringah Rd was closed eastbound at Alfred St after the incident as police investigated.
