A rake bearing the defiant message “We will never give up” alongside the signatures of police and fireys who spent more than a month digging up bushland in the renewed hunt for William Tyrrell’s remains has been erected as the search for the missing three-year-old quietly ended on Wednesday.
The rake was cemented into the search ground, about 1km from where the boy vanished seven years ago.
“Search for William Tyrrell. We will never give up. 14/11-15/12/21/. NSW + RFS,” the rake read.
Even on the final day of the operation, the search crew continued to find potential clues pulled from the bushland.
At about 10am on Wednesday investigators came across a small bone which was placed in an evidence bag for examinations.
The find created a brief stir among officers who then traded their rakes for small garden trowels to scour through the surrounding dirt — but there was nothing else of note recovered.
Strike Force Rosann detectives will continue to prepare a fresh brief of evidence for the coroner.
