A new search in the disappearance of William Tyrrell will begin on Monday in Kendall where he went missing, with police hoping it will go someway to discovering what happened to NSW’s most famous missing child.
Three-year-old William, dressed in a Spider-Man suit, went missing from his foster grandmother’s property on Benaroon Drive, Kendall, on the NSW Mid North Coast in September 2014.
Police announced on Monday that over the coming two to three weeks, hundreds of officers would descend on the small town - with police “hopeful” answers would be found off the back of them obtaining “new evidence”.
“We’re going to be doing some operational activity in the Kendall area over the coming weeks,” Detective Chief Superintendent Darren Bennett said.
“There’s three specific locations and they’re all in the Kendall area.
“We’re hopeful that it will take us a degree towards proving an offence or finding out what happened to William Tyrrell.
“We’re very hopeful that we can bring this matter to some sort of conclusion.”
Det Chief Supt Bennett said the return to Kendall to search new areas had come off the back of “new evidence”.
Monday’s search area is next to a small waterway off Batar Creek Rd in Kendall, less than a kilometre from where William disappeared.
Police have set up a grid network on a dirt road adjacent to the search site and detectives are at the scene. The area to be searched is thick scrub.
A cadaver dog is due at the scene on Monday afternoon before the rest of the search party arrives later in the day
The Daily Telegraph revealed earlier this year that police were also set to interview a new person in their search for William.
Det Supt Bennett admitted that police think the chances of William still being alive are remote and they are most likely looking for remains.
“It’s highly likely that if we found something that would be a body, we are looking for the remains of William Tyrrell there’s no doubt about that,” he said.
“We’ve got some specialist assistance of what we’re going to do and experts from outside the police force are going to be assisting us.
“We’re acting on behalf of the coroner and in conjunction with coronial orders, she will be kept updated with regard to our progress.”
Det Supt Bennett also reminded the public of a $1 million reward available for information in the investigation into William’s disappearance.
