The father of a man accused of killing two siblings in a horror crash has been charged with hindering a police investigation.
The 61-year-old man was arrested at his Cartwright home on Wednesday and later charged with concealing a serious indictable offence of other and hindering an investigation.
He was granted bail and will appear in Liverpool Court on October 19.
On Wednesday, the girlfriend of Johnson Kokozian, the man police allege was driving the vehicle that caused the fatal crash, was accused of trying to hide evidence which showed he was the driver.
Tiana Savignano, 22, was arrested in dramatic scenes outside court, five days after the tragic crash at Heckenberg which claimed the lives of siblings Alina Kauffman, 24, and her brother Ernesto, 15.
Police allege that in the days after Friday’s crash, Savignano, a mother-of-one, tried to destroy evidence which showed Johnson Kokozian, 20, was behind the wheel of a black Mercedes Benz SUV when it struck the other vehicle head-on just before 9.30pm.
Kokozian, who has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death and refused bail, denied in court on Sunday that he was the driver, instead insisting he was the front seat passenger.
But police allege Kokozian had taken his father’s $200,000 SUV and, together with two mates, was skylarking around the suburb when he crossed to the wrong side of Sadlier Ave and hit the Kauffman’s car, killing the siblings.
The court heard that Kokozian, a suspended driver, fled the scene in another vehicle without checking on the dying occupants of the car he allegedly hit.
He was seen later that night on social media video eating KFC chicken and chips and joking with a mate, before handing himself into police.
Savignano, who is the mother of Kokozian’s toddler, and a friend of Kokozian, Cruz Pamoana Davis-Tuka, 21, were both charged with conceal serious indictable offence and hinder investigation.
Earlier on Wednesday, Savignano was arrested on the steps of the Liverpool Local Court, which she had attended to observe her partner’s case.
Emotional relatives of the Kauffman’s yelled out to her as she was led away.
The siblings’ mother Angelina Kauffman sobbed as she left court. She said she wants to see “justice for my beautiful kids”.
Ms Kauffman, a nursing student, had just picked up her teenage brother from his part-time job at Kmart. The pair was less than 200 metres from home when they were killed.
“They were beautiful, beautiful kids,” Mrs Kauffman said after the crash.
“Alina just wanted to help people … now she’s gone,” she sobbed.
A family friend has set up a fundraiser to help Mrs Kauffman pay for her two children’s funerals.
“I am asking for donations in the face of an unimaginable tragedy ... Alina and Ernesto, two beautiful souls full of dreams and hopes, had their lives tragically cut short in a heart-wrenching accident,” Alana Sisifa wrote.
Savignano and Davis-Tuka were expect to appear in Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday afternoon.
Pamoana Davis-Tuka, was at a home in Liverpool earlier on Wednesday and taken in for questioning at Liverpool Police Station.
In court on Wednesday morning, Kokozian did not appear on screen when the matter was briefly mentioned in court.
As his girlfriend was led away by police, a relative of the Kauffman’s yelled out to her.
Police allege Kokozian was behind the wheel of his father’s black Mercedes Benz SUV when it collided with the Kauffman’s Toyota Echo just before 9.30pm.
Officers allege the occupants of the black Mercedesleft the scene after the crash.
Following an urgent investigation, Kokozian was arrested at Liverpool police station on Saturday afternoon and charged with a slew of driving-related offences.
