A man has been charged following a hit-and-run incident that left a teenage cyclist injured in Sydney’s southwest overnight.
Officers were patrolling the Hume Highway in Bass Hill shortly before 10.30pm when they discovered a 14-year-old boy on the roadway, suffering from serious injuries.
The teen, believed to have been struck while riding an e-bike, was treated by paramedics for serious leg and pelvic injuries before being transported to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a serious but stable condition.
Police established a crime scene and officers attached to Crash Investigation Unit took over inquiries.
Following inquiries, a 60-year-old man was arrested at Bankstown Police Station and was charged with fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm.
He has been granted conditional bail to appear before Bankstown Local Court on April 16.
It comes after shocking new data from Western Sydney revealed a 400% spike in e-scooter and e-bike injuries among children in just 12 months.
The Children’s Hospital at Westmead recorded 24 hospitalisations in 2024, up from a total of 19 in the previous four years combined, with nearly two-thirds of injured riders found not wearing helmets.
