Oscars 2025 live updates: Adrien Brody wins best actor, Mikey Madison wins best actress

An Indy film up staged many other big blockbusters, as one winner threw gum at his partner before delivering an impassioned anti-Semitism speech, and Demi Moore was snubbed for Best Actress. See the winners.

Independent film Anora won five Oscars, including the final award of the night - best picture.

Adrien Brody won his second best actor Oscar for best actor for his performance in The Brutalist in an action-packed Academy Awards ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Just as he was about to step on stage, Brody removed his chewing gum and threw it at girlfriend Georgina Chapman.

Mikey Madison was named Best Actress for her role in Anora, in what was a big upset to Demi Moore who was tipped to take home the Oscar for her role in The Substance.

Hollywood’s hottest names have gathered for the movie industry’s biggest night, as Kieran Culkin and Zoe Saldana also took out top gongs.

In a moving In Memoriam segment, Morgan Freeman, who appeared on the verge of tears, paid a heartfelt tribute to screen legend Gene Hackman, who was tragically found dead alongside his wife last week.

As predicted, Culkin took out the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in A Real Pain, beating Aussie star Guy Pearce who was nominated for The Brutalist.

The former child star, who appeared emotional, was censored just after accepting this first Oscar, but it is unclear what he said.

Zoe Saldana broke down in tears after winning best supporting actress for Emilia Perez, shouting for her mother as she took to the stage.

“My mum is here; my whole family’s here,” she said. “I am floored by this honour.”

It came after debut host Conan O’Brien poked fun at Pearce in his opening monologue, putting up a headshot from the star’s Neighbours days.

The comedian also roasted Emilia Perez star Karla Sofia Gascon, who has been hit with scandal over her controversial unearthed tweets in recent weeks.

Opening the show, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo stunned the crowd with a performance of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Defying Gravity.
