Man charged over alleged abuse of baby girl in Sydney’s west

Police claim a Sydney man showed “no remorse” after allegedly strangling, shaking and hitting an eight-month-old baby girl so violently her brain shifted.

A Sydney man allegedly strangled, shook and hit an eight-month-old baby girl so violently her brain shifted.

And police claim he showed “no remorse” for the alleged attack.

The 24-year-old faced Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday after the girl was found barely conscious on the floor of a North St Marys home on August 26.

Police facts tendered to the court revealed the child’s mother returned from getting takeaway food to find her daughter with “horrific” injuries and a PlayStation controller resting on her head.

Mount Druitt police said the man showed ‘no remorse’.

While he claimed during an August interview to be at Mt Druitt Westfield at the time of the incident, police facts said the man later told police he had a “memory lapse” and was home at the time.

Police facts sheets said the man said he was alone with the baby girl.

According to the police facts sheet, the man also told investigators her injuries were a result of the PlayStation controller falling on her head from a height – something doctors said was inconsistent with the injuries.

“The victim suffered multiple haematomas to the left side of the brain which resulted in the brain shifting to the right and compromising the underlying brain tissue,” NSW Police Senior Sergeant Craig Pullen told the court.

“The injuries sustained by the child are consistent with multiple impacts to the neck and face. They are also consistent with a shaking type mechanism.”

The man was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a person, intent to cause grievous bodily harm and intentionally choking someone without consent.

In applying for bail on Saturday, the defendant’s legal aid lawyer told the court his client was on the NDIS, was Indigenous, and had significant mental health issues, a learning disability and speech delay.

Appearing via video link barefoot and in a blue shirt, the defendant told the court: “I have an appointment with a professional psychiatrist on Tuesday and I have not had my medication for seven months.”

Police facts said the accused showed “no remorse for his offending and sought to minimise his involvement at all times”.

The police facts sheet said “police are of the belief that the accused is a risk to any child in society”.

Magistrate Andrews said: “The facts that are before the court are extremely serious involving allegations in relation to an extremely young child who at the time of the offence is described as an eight-month-old immobile baby.”

The man was refused bail to appear at Penrith Local Court on October 15. He could face 25 years in jail if convicted.
