On a suburban street in December 2019 two Mongols bikies, an angry Luke Owens and drunk Eddie Maiaua, were loitering on a footpath outside a Five Dock apartment block.
CCTV footage played in the District Court on Wednesday showed a man exit the building and walk over to 32-year-old Owens and shake his hand.
Within seconds the friendly greeting exploded into an unprovoked attack as Owens launched a lethal right hook to the man’s face which knocked him to the floor.
As Maiaua, 42, lurked in the background, Owens powered a series of brutal right punches to the head of the defenceless man who had curled into a ball, before he ripped his Gucci man bag from over his head
Maiaua came over and grabbed the bag as Owens went on to rip off the gold Seiko watch off the man’s wrist before they fled into the night.
CCTV footage of the attack, played in court, showed blood spilt across the footpath with the attack described by Judge Penelope Hock as “sickening”.
“(After the first punch the man) was effectively defenceless, yet Owens continued to punch him to the head and body,” she said.
“It was cowardly conduct … and quite sickening to watch on CCTV.”
The victim was transported to Prince of Wales hospital following the attack.
The court heard the two men had a history of violence, with Owens recently sentenced for an affray with his brother at Rydalmere Tavern last October. At the time of the Five Dock attack, Owens was serving a one-year jail sentence in the community.
Owens blamed his actions on an “angry attitude” and excessive drug and alcohol use, as his bikie pal said he was very drunk at the time of the attack.
Both men were convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company. Owens, who had spent about three months remanded in custody, was sentenced to 20 months jail to be served as an intensive corrections order in the community. Maiaua was sentenced to 20 months jail, also to be served as an intensive corrections order.
The men were also ordered to complete 200 hours and 170 hours of community service work respectively.
