Known as Big Hass to his 78,000 Instagram followers, professional bodybuilder Hassan Osseili’s social feed features a collection of shirtless snaps showcasing his bulging biceps and hulking figure.
That powerful physique which, according to his Instagram profile led him to being crowned IFBB Mr. Australia three times, played a role in the assault of his now ex-wife.
The court heard in March 2020 Osseili’s former wife went out for the night and didn’t return home until 8am the next day. The victim, still affected by alcohol, arrived home and went to leave shortly after before her bodybuilder husband grabbed her hooded jumper and pulled her back, causing her to fall and cut her arm, the court heard.
Osseili, whose Instagram bio states he is a sports nutritionist and elite trainer, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm in the Local Court and was convicted and sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order.
His lawyer told Judge Warwick Hunt in an appeal against the severity of sentence that the assault was a “misguided sense of self defence” and had “no criminal intent”.
“ (Osseili) wasn’t acting with an intent to hurt her or cause harm to her,” he said. “This is not a person who perpetrates crime on women. This was a situation that got out of hand and was genuinely an accident.
Judge Hunt noted it was a difficult situation for Osseili as “the victim of the assault had gone out the night before and hadn’t returned until 8am the next morning”.
“She was still affected by alcohol,” he said. “She went to leave the premises and he grabbed the hoodie and pulled her back.”
“I hope that his new partner’s faith in him is borne out. She spoke of him in very flattering terms”.
The court heard the bodybuilder had completed a domestic violence related course.
The appeal was upheld and Osseili was sentenced to a 12-month conditional release order without conviction.
