Food Standards is removing a growing number of products from our shelves for safety reasons - with 34 recalls already this year.
The average number of products recalled by the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has been steadily increasing since 2011 when there were 67 recalls.
By 2014 the number was 76, then 81 in 2015 before a slight dip.
In 2018 it topped 100 before 109 in 2020.
FSANZ coordinates food recalls on a national level on behalf of state and territory food enforcement agencies.
The national food authority said an increase in the number of food recalls was due to more regulatory oversight, improved self-monitoring by food businesses and increased consumer vigilance.
It said most recalls are precautionary and initiated by food businesses to ensure that potentially unsafe food is removed from distribution and sale.
Undeclared allergens were the most common reasons for food recalls last year with 51 out of 109 recorded. It was followed by microbial contamination which made up 29 recalls and foreign matter at 11.
From glass reportedly found in onions to fears of salmonella in coleslaw, here’s the full list of items that have been recalled in the state this year.
