A young man has been ordered to pay $40,000 after an alcohol-fuelled night out that he claimed to not remember turned sour.

Lachlan Scarfe, who turns 21 on Friday, needlessly set off the fire sprinklers at El Camino Cantina in The Rocks, costing the venue and NSW Fire and Rescue thousands of dollars, a court has heard.

The Gregory Hills man was ordered to pay $43,161 to the venue’s insurer for damages caused after he deliberately smashed a light in the toilets, the District Court heard on Wednesday.

Scarfe was also sentenced to an 18-month community court order for the charge of intentionally or recklessly damaging property.

His lawyer Jeremy Wood told the court his client was acting out after losing his job to COVID.

“He was highly intoxicated … he doesn’t even understand why he did it,” Mr Wood said.

The facts state Scarfe told police he could not recall the event because of how drunk he was.

Facts show the apprentice carpenter was filmed on August 22, 2020, standing on a toilet smashing a globe, saying to a witness “Oi, film this! Watch this!”

The busy venue claimed they lost a further $30,000 in revenue when they were forced to evacuate drenched patrons.

NSW Fire and Rescue estimated it cost $2,500 to assist the venue with two trucks, the court heard.

Scarfe also pleaded guilty to being found with .6 grams of cocaine four months later in Oran Park on December 27, 2020.

Mr Wood blamed the media for focusing on Scarfe’s negatives.

“He’s had cameras in his face. Reporters were following him at lunch,” he told the court.

“The reason why he had drugs was he was feeling down. He sought external stimuli to feel better.”

He said his client suffered from issues of ill mental health.

Magistrate Michael Barko told the court there was “no justification” for Scarfe’s actions.
