Four men arrested over alleged teen murder of Omar Elomar

Four men in their early 20s have been arrested at dawn on Thursday over the alleged cold case murder of 18-year-old Omar Elomar in February 2020.

Four men have been arrested over the alleged murder of teenager Omar Elomar in Sydney’s west two years ago.

Just after 11pm on February 15, 2020, 18-year-old Elomar was shot dead in his car on Cabramatta Ave in Miller.

Police said a gun wound punctured Elomar in the chest while he sat in the P-plated Lexus and paramedics were not able to revive him.

A witness told the Supreme Court last year a hooded man in a group of five people had walked towards the car before a “very loud” gunshot woke up a quiet Sydney street.

Elomar was found lying on the road by his car when multiple residents came to his assistance and began CPR.

Prosecutor Sean Hughes told the court last year several teens had arrived in three vehicles “armed to the teeth” with cricket bats, stumps and baseball bats they had bought at Casula Kmart.

The teens had been seeking two young members of Elomar’s family after a schoolboy brawl the night before, a witness said.

Noah Albert, who 18 at the time of the shooting, was late last year the first person to be charged over the death.

He pleaded not guilty to murder claiming he did not know the gun would be present.

CCTV footage from the night played in court showed a series of cars driving through the streets where Elomar was killed with a shotgun.

The witness said Mr Albert became the touch point for the rival group to exchange text messages and phone calls with the opposing group.

The witness, who can’t be named, said the group armed themselves with the sporting equipment for protection because they “didn’t know what we were in for”.

Mr Albert was not involved in the brawl but the court was told he began talking to the group due to his links to a boy, who was his friend’s younger brother, involved in the previous fight.

It is not disputed that he was talking to the group and helped to organise the meeting.

Mr Albert was initially charged with concealing an indictable offence but that was upgraded to murder after forensic police found a handprint matching his on Elomar’s car, contending Mr Albert was likely aware of the gun’s presence due to it’s size and his alleged proximity to the shooting.

Mr Albert was ultimately acquitted.

The four new arrests come after Liverpool police handed over the investigation to detectives from the Homicide Squad under Strike Force Cero.

Further inquiries led to the new arrests, in separate locations, just before 6am on Thursday.

The men — aged 25, 20, 23 and 22 — were arrested at homes in Bonnyrigg, Macquarie Fields, Gregory Hills and Orange.

They were taken to their respective local police stations and are expected to be charged.

Officers from Central West Police District and South West Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad helped throughout the operation.

Following Mr Elomar’s death, his mother Souad Elomar, pleaded for people to come forward and help deliver justice for her son.

“Omar was beautiful, loving, caring and the type of person who would put others needs before himself sacrificing his social time, his weekends to care for his brother with special needs,” Mrs Elomar said.

“He was ambitious. He had started a new job and was two weeks into his TAFE studies, ready to take on the world.

“Our family have never-ending days of grief knowing that he will never come home, so if you know anything, do the right thing, come forward and help us find some peace.”
