A magistrate has requested a sentencing assessment before he decides the fate of Daniel Johns after the rock star formally pleaded guilty to high-range drink driving.

Johns registered a blood alcohol reading of 0.157 after being involved in a crash on the Pacific Highway near Tea Gardens last month.

A woman was injured in the crash, which occurred after Johns drove out of a service station and drove north on the southbound lanes.

The former Silverchair frontman remains in a rehabilitation facility for his ongoing battle with alcohol and mental illness and did not front Raymond Terrace Local Court when his case was briefly mentioned.

Johns’ lawyer Bryan Wrench formally entered the guilty plea to high-range drink driving before magistrate Ian Cheetham adjourned the matter until June.

Mr Cheetham requested a sentencing assessment report from Newcastle Community Corrections and ordered Johns to contact the corrections office within seven days.

It is not the first time Johns has been charged with drink driving,

He was fined $880 and had his licence disqualified after he was pulled over in a suburban Merewether street in 2014 for speeding.

On that occasion, Johns said he had four large glasses of wine in three hours and registered a blood alcohol level of 0.124.

He was ordered to undergo a traffic offenders course before being sentenced.

The day after being charged with the high-range drink driving offence, Johns revealed on Instagram he had been self-medicating with alcohol as he battled recent panic attacks due to suffering ongoing depression, anxiety and PTSD.

“As you know, my mental health is a work in progress. I have good days and bad days but it’s something I always have to manage,” Johns wrote.“Over the last week I began to experience panic attacks. Last night I got lost while driving and I was in an accident. I am OK, everyone is OK.

“Alongside my therapy, I’ve been self-medicating with alcohol to deal with my anxiety and depression. I know this is not sustainable or healthy.

“I have to step back now as I’m self-admitting to a rehabilitation centre and I don’t know how long I’ll be there. Appreciate your love and support as always.”

The musician has been regularly engaging with his 90,000 plus followers on Instagram in the lead-up to the release of his first new music in seven years.
