Comanchero bikie boss Allan Meehan moved his wife and child from Sydney to the Gold Coast because he had a “$3 million hit on his head”, a court has heard.

In a bail application, defence barrister Angus Edwards told Southport Magistrates Court that Meehan had left NSW and moved his wife and child to the Gold Coast because he had a “$3 million hit on his head”.

Mr Edwards said Meehan had emailed NSW police to tell them he was moving but had not told them the address as required under the crime prevention order because he “perhaps didn’t trust the police from NSW”.

Mr Edwards said his client had no charges against him and wasn’t trying to flee.

“He wasn’t fleeing charges, he was trying to get away from a hit which was on his life,” he said.

Meehan appeared in the dock of Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday afternoon, closely guarded by two police officers.

He nodded and smiled at a brunette woman in the public gallery as he entered the courtroom.

Mr Edwards said Meehan had spoken with his lawyers and mistakenly believed the crime prevention order did not apply outside NSW.

Magistrate Joan White expressed concerns for Meehan’s safety if he was released on bail and “maybe he will fail to appear (back in court) if something happens to him”.

But Mr Edwards said his client was safer on bail than behind bars “and the criminal world don’t know where he is”.

He said Meehan had signed a 12-month lease on a house and his child had enrolled in a local school.

Meehan told Magistrate White from the dock that the lease was on his name.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Greg McKenzie said Meehan had put down $80,000 to rent a home on the Gold Coast so he could “continue affiliations with outlaw motorcycle gangs and live the lifestyle that he’s used to”.

The Comanchero boss had access to a BMW and a new VW Amarok which were “very lavish things” for a man with only $47 in his business account and $6425 in savings, Sgt McKenzie said.

Mr Edwards said the rent had been paid for by Meehan’s mother-in-law who was concerned for his and his family’s safety.

Ms White said she was concerned Meehan “is r going to turn up at all” at court and he had left NSW “without the appropriate notification to authorities”.

She refused bail and remanded him in custody of NSW detectives to appear in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on Friday.

It comes three months after Meehan was hit with a serious crime prevention order.

Meehan, 35, was arrested at a Gold Coast house in an early morning raid as police continue to crackdown on criminal groups and organised crime.

The national president of the outlaw motorcycle gang is expected to be extradited to Sydney on Friday where he will be charged with breaching the strict SCPO he is under.

Police will allege in court that Meehan contravened his SCPO by not providing the full address of his temporary accommodation at Benowa Waters where he was found, not providing an intended return date to his primary residence, and possessing or using a communication device with encrypted message capabilities.

The NSW Supreme Court enforced the SCPO on Meehan in late November last year, allowing police to heavily monitor and scrutinise his movements.

Under the terms of the order, Meehan must not associate with 34 nominated people, he must live at a certain address and must notify police at least 24 hours in advance if he intends on staying the night elsewhere.

He is also restricted to having just one bank account, credit card and debit card, must not hold more than $10,000 in cash or use an encrypted mobile phone and must not wear bikie colours or jewellery outside his house.

If Meehan ever uses a taxi or Uber, he is required to provide police with the number plate and his destination within 24 hours of taking the trip.

“The NSW Police Force employ a number of measures to prevent, restrict and disrupt those involved in serious crime-related activities,” a NSW Police spokesman said.

Bikie-busting cops from the Gold Coast Major and Organised Crime Squad were involved in Meehan’s arrest at a Benowa Waters home.

“The man was arrested and taken into custody without incident and is expected to be extradited by NSW Police Force,” a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said.

“This arrest involved detectives from the Organised Crime Gangs Group, New South Wales Criminal Group Squad and the Australian Federal Police National Anti-Gangs and is a reminder to gang members, that National Taskforce Morpheus are committed to working together to safeguard the community.”

Meehan took over as the club’s national president in June last year.

Meehan was promoted to national boss in June 2022 after then president Mick Murray was charged with murder. Murray is still before the courts.

Originally a Rebel after he joined aged 18, Meehan defected to the Comanchero in 2014, holding positions of Sutherland chapter president and ACT commander, before being appointed NSW commander in 2021.

He announced his elevation to president on social media with a post showing his new title embroidered on his vest, and the words: ‘U cant see the eyes of the demon, until him come a callin.’
