A difficult manhunt for the killers of a notorious gang boss with many enemies has been made more difficult because of the “discipline” of the men who pulled the trigger.
Mahmoud “Brownie” Ahmad was gunned down on Narelle Crescent in Greenacre on April 27, 2022, after repeated warnings from NSW Police that his life was in danger.
Hoping to uncover further leads, Task Force Erebus investigators have released CCTV footage of vision of the moment Ahmad was fatally shot as he got into his silver Ute after visiting a friend who lived on the street.
The CCTV footage shows a black Porsche Cayanne pulled up alongside Ahmad, before a man opens fire, leaving the notorious gangster dead on the road next to his vehicle.
Four people are currently before the courts on charges relating to Ahmad’s murder, but none of them are alleged to have been the shooters — with Homicide Squad boss Danny Doherty saying he hoped that would soon change.
“This has been a violent and callous shooting, as you can see from the footage and from the resulting impact on the vehicle behind him, he was sprayed with a number of bullets which killed him,” Detective Superintendent Doherty said.
“It’s very disciplined, and it shows the extent people involved in organised crime murders go to … it’s about trying to not leave the evidence behind.
“As we see with this particular murder there’s four people before the courts already but we still haven’t charged anybody with the actual shooting.
“A number of people still haven’t come forward as well, and after a number of months they may … feel comfortable to come forward.
“Today is about finding who pulled the trigger, someone out there would know who pulled the trigger.
“Mr Ahmad’s family have been working with the police, they would like to know the answer to who pulled the trigger as well.”
Little more than a week after Ahmad was killed a pair of gunmen opened fire on Comanchero bikie boss Tarek Zahed and his brother Omar outside an Auburn gym.
The latter died at the scene while Tarek was shot ten times, including in the eye, but survived.
Just days after that incident Rami Iskander – the step-nephew of “Brownie” Ahmad – was killed at Belmore.
Police are understood to be investigating whether the men who killed Ahmad were the same ones who killed his step-nephew.
Initially the underworld rumour mill linked Mahmoud Ahmad’s death to his role in extorting crime figures with a rumoured $1 million bounty on his life. Brownie is one of 16 people killed in Sydney’s gangland wars in the last two years.
