A major police investigation is underway after a mother and her disabled teenage daughter were found dead in separate bedrooms of their home in Sydney’s north-west this morning.

Jennifer Carrig, 53, and her 13-year-old daughter were found dead inside the property on Menzies Road in Marsfield around 10.30am on Thursday after police responded to a concern for welfare.

Sources said both mother and daughter were found unconscious in separate bedrooms of the home, with no obvious signs of injury.

Local detectives have taken carriage of the investigation with a post mortem examination to be carried out, in a bid to answer the many questions about what happened.

Ms Carrig has lived at the home for several years with her daughter, who is understood to have required full time care.

Detectives have taped off the home, which remains an active crime scene, as forensic officers continue to scour the property, and say they cannot yet confirm whether the deaths are suspicious.

Neighbours told The Daily Telegraph they were “absolutely shocked” by the grim discovery on their quiet street, saying they didn’t hear or see anything usual before the bodies were found.

“I’m devastated,” one local said.

“When we saw all the police we didn’t imagine this was the reason.”

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said she saw Ms Carrig’s older son “sitting out the front shaking” with police.

“He looked very upset,” they said.

“He had his head in his hands, rocking back and forth. It was horrible.”

Ms Carrig’s best friend Samantha Thomas-Barber said the 53-year-old was the “best mum”.

“She was the best so caring and thoughtful,” she said. “A true treasure and warrior … she was the best mumma to her family.”

Neighbour Vera Wen said she often saw Ms Carrig and the teen girl, understood to be her child – and was “totally shocked” by the news.

“I’m still shaking,” she said

“I don’t know the mum very well but we say hello and I would see her with her daughter.

“She would come out and put her daughter on the bus every day.

“She was a very nice lady, so friendly.”

Sources said there had been reports the women had been sick for the past few weeks, but that was unconfirmed.

However a crime scene has still been established and in a statement, NSW Police said: “Officers attached to Ryde Police Area Command arrived to find two female bodies. They are both yet to be formally identified.

“A crime scene was established, and detectives have commenced an investigation into the circumstance surrounding the incident.

“Anyone with information in relation to the incident is urged to contact local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
