A Cranbourne West man who allegedly stabbed an on-duty cop who was answering an alleged false call for aggravated burglary has had his plea for bail denied.
Moses Thurairajasingam, 18, fronted Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on September 4 after spending a night behind bars for the alleged stabbing of a police officer on September 3.
Mr Thurairajasingam faced charges including assaulting an emergency worker, intentionally causing serious injury and common law assault.
In court on Wednesday, police alleged Mr Thurairajasingam made a false report to triple-0, claiming he had been the victim of an aggravated burglary and had been assaulted during the incident.
Attending police officers arrived at the southeastern address “believing they were approaching someone who needed their help”, the court heard.
In shocking CCTV footage and body worn camera footage shown to the court, police approached Mr Thurairajasingam asking if he had been the person who called police.
Mr Thurairajasingam didn’t respond, allegedly lunging at one of the attending officers using a 13cm kitchen knife he had concealed behind his back.
Police allege Mr Thurairajasingam stabbed the officer in the thigh, leaving him in hospital and in need of surgery.
After the officer retreated, Mr Thurairajasingam was stopped and told to drop the knife by the accompanying officer.
Police allege Mr Thurairajasingam then told the police to “shoot him” three times.
The court heard Mr Thurairajasingam had allegedly asked his sister earlier in the day if he “stabbed someone, would the police shoot me?”.
Police allege he said he “wanted to be shot so he could go to heaven” during the arrest.
The teenager had been previously diagnosed with schizophrenia and depression and had been medicated since a seven-week stint in hospital in 2021.
In a bail application before Magistrate Stephen Ballek, the police argued Mr Thurairajasingam was “calculated” and had “no remorse for his actions”.
“He’s clearly expressed suicide ideation and he’s willing to use other people as a means to an end,” the prosecution said.
“Nothing could mitigate the risk, particularly to his family. He could attempt suicide by cop again.”
Mr Ballek said the alleged offending was “very serious”.
“Not only the stabbing itself, but the actions of the accused were calculated and planned,” he said.
Mr Ballek denied the bail application, ordering Mr Thurairajasingam to remain in police custody until the next date and ordered he be treated for his mental health issues by prison healthcare staff.
Mr Thurairajasingam is set to return to the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on November 22.
