A police officer who was stabbed while responding to reports of a burglary drew his firearm and told his alleged attacker to “drop the knife”.
The male first constable was stabbed in the thigh while responding to reports of an aggravated burglary on George Frederick Rd in Cranbourne West about 5pm on Tuesday evening.
Police allege an 18-year-old Cranbourne West man dialled triple-0 and made a false aggravated burglary report.
When police arrived at the property the man is alleged to have confronted the officer in the driveway, stabbing him in the leg.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said it was a “really upsetting” attack on the police member.
“(It is) really upsetting obviously, we had a unit responding in Cranbourne West last night, a bit after 5pm, they were responding to a call about a burglary being committed there,” he told Nova’s Jase and Lauren on Wednesday.
“We will be alleging that the person who actually reported the burglary then committed an attack on one of our officers and stabbed them in the thigh.
“The constable involved drew their firearm and called on him to drop the knife and he did, then obviously the rest of the troops turned up.”
The officer was on Wednesday morning in a stable condition at hospital.
The Cranbourne West man was taken into custody at the scene.
He has been slapped with a slew of charges including assault emergency worker on duty, intentionally cause serious injury, common law assault and making a false report to police.
Three other people who were also home at the time were not injured.
The alleged offender has been remanded in custody and was set to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
