The tragic five-vehicle crash at Lithgow last weekend has claimed another life after an 11-year-old girl died in hospital.
Three people died as a result of the crash on the Great Western Highway at Wallerawang, about 15km north of Lithgow, on December 29, and 14 others were injured.
An eastbound Isuzu D-max — towing a motorcycle trailer — and a westbound Toyota HiLux collided before the Toyota struck a Hyundai Tucson, trapping the occupants, while the Isuzu struck a Kia Carnival head on.
A Nissan Patrol, towing a caravan and travelling behind the Isuzu — hit the trailer.
The Isuzu and Kia drivers, Jason McMahon and David Drozd, were trapped and died at the scene.
The six passengers of Kia, a 41-year-old woman and five children aged between five and 15, were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Westmead and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Police reported on Saturday afternoon that the 11-year-old girl had died. The four other children were in a stable condition, and the woman has since been released.
The Hyundai driver, a 55-year-old man, suffered multiple fractures and was flown to John Hunter Hospital, while his two passengers were also taken to hospital for treatment.
They all remain in stable conditions.
The four occupants of the Toyota and four occupants of the Nissan were assessed at the scene. Those two drivers, aged 39 and 42, were taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
An investigation into the circumstances of the horror crash is being conducted by the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit.
