Shots fired at Kellyville home while three people inside, car found torched nearby in suspected linked incident

Police believe a drive-by shooting that damaged a Hills District home overnight is a case of mistaken identity, with a nearby suspicious car fire also under investigation.

Police have confirmed last night’s shooting in North Kellyville is believed to have been a targeted hit, however the people shot at were allegedly a case of mistaken identity.

The late-night shooting left a home riddled with bullet holes while three people were inside.

Superintendent Naomi Moore said the number of bullets shot at the property has convinced police the shooting was planned, however the residents aren’t known to police.

“I think by virtue of the number of bullets penetrating a house, it was quite targeted,” Supt Moore said.

“We believe the wrong house has been targeted.

“Their reaction, the fact they aren’t known to police, it would suggest it was not the right intended target .”

Supt Moore refused to rule out if the shooting had links to Sydney’s underworld.

“People don’t drive around shooting at other people’s houses unless there is some element of organised crime,” she said.

“There are other premises nearby in the vicinity that may have had issues in the past.”

Police are unaware of how many shooters were involved but believe they may have fled the burnt out car on foot.

Earlier, Police were called to Nangar Crescent in North Kellyville shortly before 11pm following reports of shots fired at a home.

Officers arrived to find damage to the front door and windows of the two-storey home.

Three occupants — two men and a woman — were inside at the time but escaped uninjured.

A short time later, emergency services were called to Watergum Close in nearby Rouse Hill after reports of a car on fire.

Fire and Rescue crews extinguished the blaze, but the vehicle was destroyed.

Officers were observing the scene throughout the morning, with a group of roughly 10 officers searching the front lawn for any evidence.

A police dog was also at work, scouring the entire block, even making its way to a park roughly 100m away from the home.

The forensics team spent the majority of the morning working on the balcony of the top storey of the house, which looks to be the only part of the house hit by the spree of bullets.

Police are treating the car fire as suspicious and are investigating whether it may be linked to the Kellyville shooting.

Detectives are also probing whether the home was the intended target of the gunfire.
