A manhunt is underway for an arsonist who tried to set fire to a Marrickville restaurant on two separate occasions last month, with the suspect using fireworks to ignite the blaze during their second attempt.
CCTV footage from Tuohy Lane, located off Illawarra Rd near Marrickville Station, captures a masked individual setting a fire in the restaurant’s courtyard on the evening of May 29.
Firefighters swiftly responded to the scene and were able to extinguish the small fire within minutes.
However, the following night, the same man, wearing the same clothes, returned alone, this time carrying fireworks.
Just before 1:am on May 30, he poured accelerant from a jerry can across the restaurant’s courtyard before igniting a larger fire with the fireworks.
This prompted the formation of a crime scene and led to an inquiry by specialist police, with the investigation quickly revealing that the restaurant had been previously targeted just hours earlier.
In a possible connection, a similar arson incident occurred at a tobacconist shop in Ettalong Beach, located on Memorial Ave on August 9, 2024.
Fire and Rescue NSW quickly responded to the fire, which had been deliberately set, and were able to contain the damage.
Specialist police established a crime scene, and inquiries by officers from Brisbane Water Police District eventually formed Strike Force Fortrose, which was referred to the Financial Crimes Squad’s Arson Unit for further investigation.
Police are now seeking information about a man who may have crucial details regarding both incidents. Described as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern descent, around 185 cm tall, with a medium build, black curly shoulder-length hair, and glasses.
The man was spotted driving a grey Toyota HiLux at a nearby service station near the time of the Ettalong arson.
Authorities urge anyone with information on the identity of the man or details about the incidents to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
