It wasn’t her first choice sport but if Amy Parmenter makes her Super Netball debut she could well leap higher than she ever did as a budding high jumper.
The 21-year-old has been elevated from the Giants squad into the team for the 2019 Super Netball season with a possibility of making her debut against the Swifts on Sunday.
“I would be over the moon if it happened,’’ said Parmenter of finally taking the court after two seasons as a Giants training partner.
FEAR FACTOR: Swifts early season goal
BRUISING: Players bracing for rough and tumble
“There was a lot of opportunities to play in the pre-season so I feel like I am ready.’’
The young midcourter was a relative late comer to netball with much of her early school years spent swimming, playing touch football and high jumping.
“I wanted to be a high jumper but didn’t have the legs for it. I just stopped growing,’’ said the 176cm Parmenter.
“But then I made a made a talent camp and just fell in love with the culture and girls. And fortunately the high jumping helped with my vertical jump.
SYDNEY DERBY: Teams forecasting heated battle
AUSSIE SKIPPER: Armed and dangerous for Super Netball
“I used to cry when carnivals were cancelled. I am a complete netball tragic.
“If the 14-year-old me had been told I would be a Giant one day I would have passed out.’’
If Parmenter is sent out in the local derby between the Giants and Swifts on Sunday she will be in good company.
Diamonds shooter Caitlin Bassett is slated to make her Super Netball debut with the Giants on Sunday with centre Kim Green a childhood idol.
“I always looked up to Kim Green. I always wanted to be just like her,’’ Parmenter said.
The Giants hold the upper hand on the Swifts in Super Netball with three wins and one loss.
Key to their success on Sunday will be the fitness of Green who was rested for a pre-season game last week but whose marshalling and leadership in the centre court is crucial.
