When you talk comparisons between the greatest thoroughbreds of all time, the spectre of Phar Lap always looms large, but now he has a rival in Winx. Little wonder they are the Wonder Race favourites. WATCH THE VIDEO

The Wonder Race: Winx vs Phar Lap

Sydney’s super mare Winx will forever linked with the legendary Phar Lap if she can win her farewell race, the $4 million Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Winx is aiming for her 37th career win, and her 33rd in succession, in the weight-for-age event, the richest race of Sydney’s autumn carnival.

If Winx wins as expected — bookies believe she is virtually unbeatable and are offering odds of just $1.06 to win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes — she will be retired with the same number of career wins as Phar Lap.

Winx’s four-year unbeaten reign that has yielded 32 consecutive wins including a world record 24 Group 1 successes has prompted comparisons with Phar Lap.

There are many who now believe she is the greatest of all time with a record that boasts four Cox Plates, four George Ryder Stakes, four Chipping Norton Stakes, three George Main Stakes, two Queen Elizabeth Stakes, an Epsom and Doncaster Handicap.

But Phar Lap was also phenomenal racehorse. He won one of his first 10 starts then developed into a winning machine with 36 wins from his last 41 starts.

Phar Lap became a national icon during the Great Depression years as he dominated his rivals over all distances, race and track conditions, often winning his races by huge margins. His major wins included the Melbourne Cup, two Cox Plates, AJC and Victoria Derbies and Futurity Stakes.
