The Wonder Race: Sunline vs Might & Power

Champions Sunline and Might And Power liked to lead and dominate their races.

Their “catch-me-if-you-can” style of racing made them compelling to watch and both had some of finest moments at Royal Randwick.

If Sunline didn’t go to the front in her races, invariably she settled outside the leader and forced the issue. Might And Power was hard to restrain, rolling along at a high cruising speed that sapped the stamina of his rivals.

Sunline and Might And Power, both Hall of Fame champions, deserve their place in the field for The Daily Telegraph’s “The Wonder Race”.

But who would lead “The Wonder Race” is another fascinating aspect of the hypothetical race that brings together 12 of the greatest racehorses of all time.

Sunline, trained by Trevor McKee, enjoyed the Randwick “mile” course where she won five Group 1 races – 1998 Flight Stakes, and two Doncaster Handicaps in 1999 and 2002, and two All Aged Stakes in 2000 and 2002.

Her second Doncaster win was one of the most famous in the race’s long history.

Sunline was burdened with 58kg, as always she bravely made the running and just held off a surging Shogun Lodge to win narrowly.

This was Sunline at her best. She was a mighty mare, winning 32 of her 48 races, 13 at Group 1 level and earning $11.3 million prizemoney,

She also won two Cox Plates in 1999-2000 and just missed winning a third in 2001 when Northerly ran her down near the line.

Sunline emerged just as Might And Power’s magnificent race career came to an end.

Might And Power was a powerful stayer with an extravagant action. He hit the ground hard with every stride and this probably caused the leg injuries which plagued the champion towards the end of his racing days.

When injury-free, Might And Power was virtually unstoppable at 1600m and further. He won 15 of his 33 races including the 1997 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, and 1998 Cox Plate. The only other horse to win those three races was Rising Fast in 1954.

But perhaps Might And Power’s best win was in the 1998 Queen Elizabeth Stakes over the Randwick 2000m – the same course and distance for The Wonder Race.

Might And Power thrashed an outstanding field including Champagne, Catalan Opening, Juggler and Integaze to win by 10-and-a-half lengths.

The final two entries in “The Wonder Race”, mighty mare Winx and the legendary Phar Lap will be introduced in Monday’s The Daily Telegraph.

A reader poll has been set-up on Twitter where using the #TheWonderRace you can have your say on who might win. Revered racecaller John Tapp and myself will discuss the merits of each of the 12 runners at www.dailytelegraph.com.au.

Form guru Gary Crispe has used his exclusive Timeform ratings to analyse the chances of all 12 runners.

Then on Wednesday, April 10, just three days before Winx’s farewell race, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Tapp will call a simulated race, “The Wonder Race” live at 12.30pm at www.dailytelegraph.com.au.
