Winx has started an odds-on favourite in her last 28 starts – but she is at each-way odds for The Wonder Race.

Imagine getting $4.50 about Winx in any race. What $6 for Phar Lap, or $11 for Bernborough, for that matter. How about $26 for champions like Lonhro and Makybe Diva!

These odds emphasise the sheer depth of talent in the Wonder Race so trying to determine the favourite for this clash of champions is as difficult as trying to select the winner.

I called on the expert price assessors at TAB Fixed Odds to frame a hypothetical market for The Wonder Race which comprises 12 of the greatest racehorses in Australian turf history competing at weight-for-age over the Royal Randwick 2000m course.

Super mare Winx has come up as favourite at $4.50 – the last time she started in the “black” in any race was the 2015 Cox Plate, which she won at $4.60.

TAB’s Gerard Middleton said framing a market for the race of champions was an extremely difficult exercise.

“On the back of being unbeaten for 32 races over four years, including four Cox Plates, Winx holds favouritism at $4.50 ahead of the legendary Phar Lap at $6,’’ Middleton said. “But this is a race that will be the subject of pub debates for decades to come.’’

There is no right or wrong answer when comparing champions from different eras.

Everyone has an opinion. Everyone has a favourite racehorse.
