Jockey Glen Boss chasing Melbourne autumn riches in month-long stint as he sidesteps COVID restrictions

Rides on stars such as Sir Dragonet and Bivouac have convinced top jockey Glen Boss to base himself in Melbourne, but that’s not why the champion is heading south.

Flamboyant jockey Glen Boss will go “full tilt” chasing big-race wins in the month he is based full-time in Melbourne in the early part of the autumn.

Boss decided to base himself in Melbourne for the first half of the autumn to avoid the possibility of missing rides due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Boss has the bookings on Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet and the Newmarket Handicap winner Bivouac after riding the pair to Group 1 triumphs in the spring.

Ever the showman, Boss’s return will add a little bit of star factor to the Melbourne autumn.

“There has been a lot of restrictions placed on people going out of Sydney to other states,” Boss told RSN.

“So I’m going to make the move to Melbourne and stay there at least a month or so.

“I don’t want to get caught anywhere and miss out on rides, so I thought I have just got to make a commitment to go one way or another.”

Boss won the Cox Plate on imported galloper Sir Dragonet.

Boss will start his Melbourne stint at Tuesday’s Australia Day meeting at Caulfield.

The big-race rider said he would be aboard Sir Dragonet when the import trials at Geelong on Thursday week before riding Bivouac in a jumpout soon after.

But Boss is keen to pick up other key rides in the autumn features.

“I’m going down there to go full tilt and build up a good base until midway through the autumn when I make my way back up to Sydney,” Boss said.

“I’ll be putting out feelers and seeing where we end up.”

The Godolphin-owned Bivouac is set to resume in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) down the Flemington straight on February 13.

TAB has Bivouac as a $3.50 favourite in its early market on the Lightning Stakes.
